BELLEVUE, WA – December 15, 2001 – Solid Modeling Solutions is pleased to announce the purchase of Nlib, the NURBS geometry library developed by Geomware, Inc. of Tyler, Texas. Wayne Tiller, president of Geomware, and co-author of Nlib, will continue to be directly involved with the support and continued development of the Nlib product through a close working relationship with Solid Modeling Solutions (SMS). SMS will continue to offer Nlib in the same manner as Geomware has since its initial release in 1995; i.e., Nlib is distributed in source code form and without payment of any per seat royalty fees.
Wayne Tiller said, “I have enjoyed working closely with Solid Modeling Solutions since 1998, and when it came time for me to sell my product in order to focus my attention on advanced geometry development and consultation, SMS was my first choice to take the product forward. I am confident that Nlib will continue to be enhanced and supported for many years to come. I will be taking a personal role in both those endeavors for the foreseeable future.”
The relationship between Wayne Tiller and Robert Blomgren, co-founder of SMS, goes back to the very beginning of NURBS. Robert was at Boeing and Wayne was at SDRC when they both independently developed a new and improved geometry representation. The result was non-uniform rational B-splines, or NURBS, for short. Wayne and Les Piegl, professor at the University of South Florida, continued to investigate NURBS functionality and co-authored the definitive work “The NURBS Book” published by Springer. Robert continued the application of NURBS as founder and president of Applied Geometry in the development of AGLib. Robert was a co-founder of SMS in early 1998. Robert recently stated “I have enjoyed many years and many interesting discussions with Wayne as we shared our NURBS experiences. Our collaboration continued when Wayne agreed to team with SMS and offer Nlib as the geometry engine in SMLib. We are truly delighted to continue our work with Wayne as we take this step to incorporate Nlib into the SMS product line. It will provide our customers an effortless avenue to start with a powerful NURBS curve and surface library and then transition easily to the state of the art SMLib solid modeling library as their applications warrant.”
SMS has used Nlib as the basic geometry engine of SMLib since its first release in the fall of 1998. SMLib and Nlib form a platform-independent geometry kernel, provided by an independent supplier who is truly application neutral. Data exchange software is available for IGES, STEP, VDAFS, and SAT.
