SMS Announces Call for Grant Applications

Bellevue, WA – March 11, 2008 – Solid Modeling Solutions (SMS) requests grant applications for NLib software licenses to encourage and simplify teaching and researching advanced geometry topics. NLib is SMS’s NURBS-based geometry modeling library containing an extensive set of routines that provide non-uniform rational B-spline technology for curves, surfaces, and volumes including data fitting, point inversion, surface triangulation, curve and surface constructions, root finding, and matrix operations as documented at www.smlib.com/nlib.html and published in “The NURBS Book” by Les Piegl and Wayne Tiller. Grant applications are due by May 1, 2008. Applications will be considered for both teaching and/or research. NLib software license grants will be awarded for a one year period, after which grant applications for annual extensions will be considered. NURBS-based technology is the core of modern robust geometry applications such as CAD/CAM. We believe that broad exposure to NURBS technology in academic settings will lead to substantial advances in both academia and industry.

Provisions of the grants will be as follows:

  • • One object license for NLib will be provided to a technical focal point on the staff or faculty of an accredited institution of advanced learning. That technical focal point will be the single point of contact with SMS for purposes of support and upgrades.
  • • A limited number of NLib object licenses will be provided to students, researchers, or staff at the institution for purposes of pursuing their academic studies and research.
  • • The value of the grant is determined by the number of licenses granted at $3125 per object license per year for Advanced NLib with Tessellation and $500 per object license of each data translator per year.
  • • Grantees are eligible to submit interesting extensions to the NLib kernel or novel applications of the technology that they have made to SMS for consideration for a future financial grant toward the applicant’s education or research. Grants for NLib extensions must include SMS non-exclusive licensing rights to the software.

Applications should include at least the following information:

  • The department or departments, which would make use of the NLib geometric kernels.
  • The number of students or researchers who would utilize an NLib object license.
  • The nature of the academic or research pursuit and their relevance to NURBS-based geometric technology.
  • The technical focal point, their position, and their qualifications to act in that capacity.
