| Solid Modeling Solutions Announces Release 3.0 |
|
Solid Modeling Solutions is pleased to announce SMLib 3.0. SMLib 3.0 represents the third major release since the original software introduction in October, 1998, and it represents a truly independent geometry kernel without proprietary dependencies.

| SMLib Release 3.0 new features include: |
|
- An extensive set of new NURBS curve and surface constructions and manipulations has been added as an enhancement to the Nlib portion of SMLib. There are twenty-two new features to the base NURBS library in addition to many new geometry, Bezier, math and utility functions.
- Topology-based tessellation (also known as POPLib - Polygon OPtimization Library) has been added to enable the creation of crack-free tessellations. POPLib enables users to select from a variety of tessellation criteria to produce polygons optimized for various applications. POPLib uses geometric and topological information to produce a minimal number of polygons in a polygon optimization process. POPLib produces crack-free polygonal meshes for connected sets of trimmed surfaces or solids at all tessellation tolerances. The performance of POPLib makes it suitable for highly interactive applications.
- Enhancements have been made to the filleting framework to enable it to handle many more difficult cases and to produce better quality corner blending surfaces.

Fully compatible data translation libraries have been updated to support SMLib 3.0 and are available to support IGES (including entity types 158, 190, 192, 194, 196, and 198), STEP, and VDAFS formats.
SMLib is released as C and C++ source code and is certified for Windows, NT, Unix, and Linux platforms. SMLib continues to be licensed monthly for unlimited internal use at one site or for use at one development site with unlimited external distribution rights for the resultant applications without payment of any per seat royalty fees. | Dassault Takes Over the ACIS Kernel |

Dassault Systemes has signed an agreement to acquire the Component Business Division and the ACIS 3D modeling kernel technology of Spatial Inc. The relevant software products include ACIS 3D Toolkit, IntraVISION, and JetScream. Spatial's 3D component business will retain the Spatial name, and it will be the foundation of a new Dassault Technology Company. Bernard Charles, president of Dassault Systemes, says he plans to use the ACIS kernel to "create an industry standard to simplify 3D data exchange in the industry."
With this announcement, the ACIS kernel and the Parasolid kernel are now controlled by companies with a substantial CAD software suite which will highly constrain and direct the development of their respective kernels. Solid Modeling Solutions believes that SMLib is now the dominant geometry kernel that will be independent of major proprietary influence. SMLib will continue to evolve to meet the needs of a broad set of needs represented by a large spectrum of applications. Licensees of SMLib can be confident that it will continue its rapid development program, remain a truly independent library, delivered in source code, and priced to compete in the industry.
